Succeeding in your work goals will never come by if you’ll not act accordingly. You will not become an Executive Vice President of Sales of your company just because that position was vacated by the sudden death of its occupant. You’ll get promoted because you are qualified as you followed a well-planned of action weaved together as part of your professional goals.
What Are Your Goals?
Your plans for your future depend on the goals that you have set up for life. They could be work goals, professional development goals or about your present professional goals. If your goals are work related, your plans could revolve around objectives on how to acquire skills in order to improve your output which could ultimately increase your income. If your need is self development skills, your focus could center on self improvement books, life coaches seminars or even self development quotes which could greatly push your motivation to a higher level in order to improve your self confidence and self esteem.
On the other hand, professional development goals will prod you to enroll on courses that could help in clothing you with more professional talents that ultimately will benefit you financially. It can develop your present professional qualifications into a higher category of learning that will make you more professionally qualified than before. Without setting up your goals, your dreams to become a higher respectable professional in your chosen field will remain just an idea in your mind. Setting up your work goals, professional development goals or even your goal to maintain what you are professionally today are the perfect steps that you have made as you are drawing closer to those targets.
Are Your Goals Smart?
After setting up your goals, don’t get relaxed, you just started the first step to a long journey ahead. Your next task is to evaluate those goals that you’ve set up if they qualify as “smart”. Your goals must pass the following questions.
- Are your goals specific? Can you identify your goal specifically from your general goals? Your goals should be specific and can readily answer the questions what do you want to achieve, what are your purposes, who are the people involved, what is the location or place and what are the requirements and the limitations.
- Are your goals measureable? Can you measure or test the effectiveness of your progress in achieving your goals? This is the only way to determine whether you are on the right track or not. Can you achieve what you planned to get in a certain period of time? If not, you have to investigate.
- Are your goals attainable? If your goal is not realistic, you’ll have problems to attain it. Your goal no matter how properly planned and beautiful will remain as is if it’s not within realities. It would be next to impossible to get what you want if it is not achievable.
- Are your goals relevant? If your goals are not relevant to what you are doing now, it would hardly get motivation and the right support. Forget your goal if it is not in tune with the things that you love to do most presently. It will not draw motivational support which you need in order to achieve it.
- Are your goals time-bound? If your goal has no time limit to achieve it, it is just there hanging in the air without definite timetable to beat. There will be no sense of urgency so that your motivation will fade away and procrastination will conquer your dampened spirit to stop. This is the result of the lack of specific time to accomplish your goal.
Our goals, regardless of their purpose and orientation whether for our career or jobs are important in setting the time of our directions. It gives us the purposes why we do things in the order we have programmed them. In the end, we can distinguish if the goals we have set are smart enough to get them accomplished. It is we who determine their failure or success!
